This is a guest post by our daughter whose nom de plume is Pinecone. She has been making the best of time at home and likes to share posts, tagged 'By Kids For Kids' with others.
We have been cooking, hiking, gardening, and crafting during quarantine. Grilling is another of our favorite family activities. Quarantine can be boring but you can try to make the most of it by having fun and trying something new. Here is a kids perspective on how to have fun during quarantine.
Do you like to cook and try new foods? We do! We have always cooked most of our meals at home but now we are cooking more than ever. We make: bread, pasta, kombucha, cheese, soup, stew, and so much more. You can make these things too. Just follow a recipe like the one for super easy focaccia bread. If your first try is a fail just keep trying. What else are you going to do?! It's pretty simple to make fresh pasta but you need a pasta machine. After you make the dough you run it through the machine to get the right thickness for noodles or raviolis. Making food is a great way to spend your time. Its like crafting but you get to eat what you make!
Stuck in the house? Need to get your energy out? Well I have an answer: go take a hike. We hike a lot. It's a great way to get the people you love together but keeps you apart from the world. We love to go in the morning when no people are around but all the animals are active. Need some good places that are open? Try Falls Lake, Umstead State Park, or Hemlock Bluffs. Luckily, more parks are open now than early in the pandemic. Sometimes we talk while hiking but other times we just listen to the birds and sounds of the forest. Hikes are a great way to get exercise and keep entertained with your family. Get out of the house and explore!
Is your yard always a mess? Do you want to care for plants but never have the time? Well now you do! You can clean up your garden, plant some flowers, grow some vegetables , and put down some mulch. We got a huge delivery of mulch and put it all around the garden beds. It looks good and is good exercise. We found seeds in the basement and started a vegetable garden in pots. We planted lettuce, beans, herbs, tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers, radishes, microgreens, and sprouts. The garden helps take our minds off what's going on in the world and brings us joy. You also (hopefully) get fresh produce! Score!
I hope you’ll try some of these ways to spend time, enjoy your family, and learn something new. So, get out and explore! Experience the world (6 feet away).
